Description
Dooley Sewing Presser Foot for top-clamping / rotary machine with ORIGINAL manual.~~ Carefully review the photographs as they serve as the main part of the description ~~
DESCRIPTION:
Highly prized by collectors, this very rare Dooley Presser Foot and Manual are nearly 100 years old. Patented in 1929, the Dooley Sewing Foot was the first multipurpose sewing machine foot of its kind. It was promoted as, "NOT AN ATTACHMENT - AN IMPROVEMENT". Just four and a half years later, the Singer Manufacturing Company patented their very similar "Style-O-Matic Foot". The Dooley disappeared from the market not long afterward.
Apart from the few years it was manufactured, why is it so rare? Since Dooley Feet are unmarked, when they are found, they often go unrecognized and unidentified.
I don't know which top-clamping machine(s) this Dooley Foot would fit. Various manufacturers like White, New Home, National, etc. made top-clamping machines. Please review the photographs to determine the measurements. The slight offset between the foot and the shank tines may indicate the make and model of sewing machine this foot was designed for. The only concern with use is ensuring the needle is properly positioned to align with the hole in the foot. When it was made the feed dogs of sewing machines were more narrow. Modern machines have wider feed dogs and this may affect how you are able to maneuver fabric under the foot while you are sewing. ***THIS IS ONLY MY BEST OPINION. I MAKE NO GUARANTEES THAT THIS FOOT WILL FIT YOUR MACHINE. USE YOUR BEST JUDGMENT.

What can you do using a Dooley Foot? The company perpetually worked to improve the features and functions of the foot. In the first full manual, the company promised eight uses:
Hemstitching * Picoting * Embroidery* Crochet Foundation * Binding * Tucking * Shirring * Smocking * Regular Sewing
With this foot I have included an ORIGINAL copy of the first manual and photocopies of an ad from the first year of sale and different versions of the instructions. The ad states "1 Foot Sews 8 Ways" but, curiously, only 7 uses are listed. The instruction sheet was published early and included instructions for hemstitching (using the foot only) and makes no mention of the Shirrer. The first manual entitled, "The Dooley PresserFoot", advertised the Dooley could be used for eight functions and introduces the Shirrer Toe. This accessory is believed to have been manufactured later and offered with the foot during the middle years of its production. (A Shirrer Toe is NOT included in this auction). Because patents can provide interesting additional information I've included photocopies of the patents for the Dooley and the Singer "Style-O-Matic". You'll receive a total of 24, single-sided pages of information.
What you will receive:
1. Rotary Dooley Foot
2. Photocopy of a 1929 ad (boasts 8 uses but lists 7)
3. Photocopy of the early instruction sheet (8+ uses)
4. An ORIGINAL copy of the first Dooley instruction manual (8 uses). Dooley manuals were folded in thirds when packaged. There are some minor tears along the folds of this manual in the cover and in the following page. Overall this manual is good condition for its age. For practical use I've also included a photocopy.
5. Photocopy of the Dooley patent
6. Photocopy of the Singer "Style-O-Matic" patent
