About Rudraksha:
Rudraksha, also rudraksh, is a Sanskrit word, which means “Rudra’s [Shiva’s] eye” (denoting the “third eye”). Rudraksha is a small blue fruit and it’s seed, from many species of large evergreen broad-leaved trees in the genus Elaeocarpus species.
In Hinduism, there is a beautiful story, that one day Lord Shiva opened His eyes after a long period of meditation, and He shed a tear. This single tear from Shiva’s eye grew into the rudraksha tree. In this way the rudraksha is also strongly associated with Lord Shiva, and all images of Shiva throughout history have always shown Him wearing rudraksha garlands.
The seeds have been worn for centuries by Hindus and Buddhists in India and Nepal as meditation malas and organic jewelry, and are valued similar to semi-precious stones.
Healing Properties:
Another meaning for the word rudraksha is “the one that has the ability to wipe our tears and provide happiness”. In this way, wearing the rudraksha is commonly believed to bestow protection (particularly the protection of Lord Shiva), give relief from suffering and provide upliftment.
Rudraksha beads are also commonly worn to sanctify the body, mind and soul, and are used for the treatment of various diseases in traditional Indian medicine.
